Middle Schools in Torrance Unified

The eight middle schools in Torrance Unified serve grades 6–8, with enrollments clustered between 612 and 678 students. In 2025–2026, their average proficiency was about 67% in English language arts (ELA), 59% in math and 58% in science—about 18, 21 and 22 percentage points above state results, respectively. However, the district average hides a substantial school-to-school spread: about 32 points in ELA, 33 in math and 28 in science. The most important finding is that these schools’ results vary widely, so the area-wide averages do not describe every school.

Edward J. Richardson Middle led in ELA at 81% and science at 70%, while Calle Mayor Middle led in math at 75%; Richardson was also second in math, at 70%. At the other end, J. H. Hull Middle had the lowest ELA result, 49%, and Philip Magruder Middle had the lowest math and science results, 42% in each. The leaders were about 14–18 points above the other schools’ average in their leading subjects, while the lowest results were about 18–21 points below the other schools’ average. SchoolDigger placed Richardson and Calle Mayor at the 96th statewide percentile; Magruder was at the 70th and Hull at the 71st.

Science results rose at all eight schools between 2024–2025 and 2025–2026, averaging an increase of about 4 points; Casimir Middle gained about 13 points. ELA was nearly flat on average, while math declined slightly; Bert M. Lynn Middle had the largest ELA drop, about 4 points, and Jefferson’s math result fell about 5 points. Other factors may help families compare schools: Calle Mayor’s student–teacher ratio was 22.5, compared with Hull’s 27.9. In 2024–2025, free/reduced lunch eligible shares were 19% at Richardson, 36% at Calle Mayor, 50% at Hull and 51% at Magruder; schools with similar reported shares had different results, so this is context rather than a simple performance guide.
