Summary:
San Rafael City High includes three schools serving grades 9–12: two comprehensive high schools and one continuation school. Their results vary substantially, so area-wide averages can hide important differences. Most notably, Terra Linda High was above the state in all three 2025–26 tested subjects, while Madrone High Continuation was far below it.
Terra Linda led the schools, with 64% proficiency in ELA, 43% in math, and 52% in science; those results were about 14, 4, and 16 percentage points above state results. It outscored Madrone by 52 points in ELA, 39 in math, and 48 in science. San Rafael High was between them in every subject, but remained below the state. Completion and attendance measures also distinguish the schools: graduation rates were 95% at Terra Linda, 80% at San Rafael, and 62% at Madrone; chronic absenteeism was 16%, 15%, and 65%, respectively. Madrone’s continuation-school setting and enrollment of 96 are important context for comparisons with the much larger high schools.
Recent changes were mixed: the three-school average rose about 1 point in ELA, 2 in math, and 8 in science from 2024–25 to 2025–26. Terra Linda’s science result climbed 17 points, even as its ELA fell 9 and math fell 4; San Rafael’s math and science improved, while its ELA slipped slightly. SchoolDigger rates Terra Linda 4 stars at the 83rd percentile, San Rafael 3 stars at the 59th, and Madrone 1 star at the 14th. The 2024–25 free/reduced lunch eligible measure was 49% at Terra Linda, 72% at San Rafael, and 77% at Madrone. Student–teacher ratios were 20.7 at Terra Linda, 19.7 at San Rafael, and 10 at Madrone; these are descriptive comparisons, not explanations for school results.
