Pittsburg Unified

The 13 schools in Pittsburg Unified include eight elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools, serving students from elementary through high school in the Pittsburg area. In 2025–26, the unweighted average proficiency rate was 29% in ELA, 18% in math and 15% in science, compared with state rates of 49%, 38% and 36%. All 13 schools also had chronic absenteeism above the state’s 18% rate; the school average was 33%, versus 32% districtwide. The clearest area-wide concern is that proficiency averages are about 20 percentage points below state rates in every subject.

Among elementary schools, Los Medanos Elementary leads in ELA and math, with 37% and 26% proficient, while Foothill Elementary leads in science at 20%; Stoneman Elementary is lowest in all three, at 19%, 13% and 8%. Rancho Medanos Junior High leads the middle schools in ELA, math and science, at 33%, 15% and 22%. Among high schools, Pittsburg Senior High is ahead of Black Diamond High (Continuation) by 24 points in ELA, 20 in math and 18 in science; because Black Diamond is a continuation school, that comparison needs context.

Recent changes are mixed: from 2024–25 to 2025–26, the average fell 2 points in ELA and science and rose 1 point in math, while state rates rose in all three subjects. Individual schools show different directions: Rancho Medanos’ science rate rose 7 points, while Parkside Elementary gained 3 points in science; Los Medanos fell 13 points in that subject. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile rank for Rancho Medanos rose from 18th to 22nd over three years, while Martin Luther King Junior Junior High fell from 27th to 12th. As context, free/reduced lunch eligible rates in 2024–25 were 75% at Los Medanos and 81% at Stoneman; these figures describe school differences but do not explain results.
