Summary:
McSwain Elementary is the sole school in the McSwain Union Elementary area, serving kindergarten through eighth grade and 912 students. With no other local school for comparison, the clearest picture comes from comparing its results with California’s and looking across grades. In 2025–2026, McSwain was close to state results in English language arts (ELA) and math, but its science score was much lower: 24% of students met the standard, compared with 36% statewide, a 12-point gap. Science is the clearest concern, and the gap widened substantially from the previous year.
No school ranks above or below another in this one-school list, but results vary considerably by grade. McSwain Elementary’s strongest relative result was seventh-grade ELA, where 63% met the standard versus 51% statewide, 12 points higher; third-grade math was also a bright spot, at 59% versus 47%, 12 points higher. The largest weak spots were fifth-grade science, at 21% versus 35% statewide, 15 points lower, and fifth-grade ELA, at 36% versus 49%, 13 points lower. Overall, ELA was 50% at the school and 49% statewide; math was 37.8% versus 38.4%, and science was 24% versus 36%. These grade-level differences matter more than a single all-school figure when considering the school.
Science moved in the wrong direction: from 30% at McSwain versus 33% statewide in 2024–2025 to 24% versus 36% in 2025–2026. The school’s score fell 7 points while the state’s rose 3, widening the gap by 10 points. ELA’s advantage narrowed from 4 points to 1, while math remained about 1 point below the state. SchoolDigger gave McSwain Elementary three stars in each of the three supplied ranking years; its latest ranking was 2,633 of 5,804 schools, at the 55th percentile, down from the 63rd percentile the prior year. Other context includes a 20.9 student–teacher ratio in 2024–2025 and 35% free/reduced lunch eligible in 2024–2025. Chronic absenteeism was 8% in 2025–2026, 11 points below the state’s 18%.
