Summary:
The McKittrick area has one school, McKittrick Elementary, serving kindergarten through grade 8, with 61 students. With no other local schools to compare, statewide results are the useful benchmark. The school’s 2025–2026 all-grades English language arts and math results were above the state, but its reported fifth-grade results were below the state in every subject.
McKittrick Elementary is both the area’s highest- and lowest-scoring school simply because it is the only one. Its all-grades proficiency was 59% in ELA and 56% in math, exceeding statewide results by 10 and 18 percentage points; in science, its 25% result was 11 points below the state. Fifth grade was a notable exception to the stronger all-grades ELA and math picture: proficiency was 27% in both ELA and math, 22 and 9 points below the state, and fifth-grade science was 9%, 26 points below. Chronic absenteeism was much lower than the state rate: 1% at the school compared with 18% statewide, a 17-point difference.
Results changed in different directions over time. All-grades ELA rose 4 points from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, while math dipped by 1 point and remained well above the state; its advantage narrowed by 2 points. Science had the sharpest reversal, falling 37 points as the state result rose 3 points, shifting the school from 29 points above the state to 11 points below. SchoolDigger’s latest ranking was at the 17th percentile with 1 star, compared with the 75th percentile and 4 stars in 2021–2022, a 58-point decline between those entries. Context measures for 2024–2025 include a 12.2 student–teacher ratio and 38% free/reduced lunch eligible. Because this is the only school, these figures cannot support comparisons among local schools or explain differences in results.
