Summary:
Castro Valley Unified has two middle schools serving grades 6–8: Canyon Middle and Creekside Middle. Together they enroll 2,172 students. In 2025–2026, their equal-school average proficiency was 70% in English language arts (ELA), 60% in math and 55% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38% and 36%. The key finding is that both schools are above the state in all three subjects, while Creekside leads Canyon in every subject.
Creekside is the standout, with 77% proficiency in ELA, 71% in math and 64% in science; Canyon scored 63%, 50% and 46%, respectively. Creekside’s leads are 13 percentage points in ELA, 22 in math and 18 in science, with the widest gap in math. Canyon is the lower-scoring of the two, but remains above state results by 14 points in ELA, 11 in math and 10 in science. SchoolDigger ranks Creekside 150th of 2,703 statewide, at the 94th percentile with five stars; Canyon ranks 513th, at the 81st percentile with four stars. Creekside’s lead also holds in each tested grade.
Recent results mostly rose, though science is an exception for Creekside. From 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, Canyon gained 1 point in ELA, 1 in math and 5 in science; Creekside gained 3 points in ELA and 3 in math, while science dipped by less than 1 point. SchoolDigger rankings also improved between 2023–2024 and 2025–2026: Creekside moved up 92 places and Canyon 35. Creekside is smaller, enrolling 754 students versus Canyon’s 1,418, and had a lower 2024–2025 student-teacher ratio, 20 versus 23. Both schools reported free/reduced lunch eligible for 2024–2025: 39% at Creekside and 41% at Canyon. Their 2025–2026 chronic absenteeism was also lower at Creekside, 7% versus Canyon’s 11%.
