Summary:

Live Oak, California, has eight schools—three elementary, one middle, two high, and two alternative schools—with grades spanning elementary through high school and a combined reported enrollment of 2,954. In 2025–2026, the unweighted average across six schools with reportable results was 46% in ELA, 32% in math, and 29% in science, each below the state averages of 49%, 38%, and 36%. The most important finding is that school results vary sharply, so the area-wide averages hide very different academic experiences.

Encinal Elementary led the six schools with current reportable scores in all three subjects: 69% in ELA, 57% in math, and 45% in science—about 54, 53, and 37 percentage points above Live Oak Alternative, respectively. Encinal was also above the state in each subject; Live Oak Middle showed a relative strength in math, at 42%, about 3 points above the state. At the other end, Live Oak Alternative scored 15% in ELA, 4% in math, and 8% in science. Live Oak High had a 97% graduation rate, compared with 88% statewide, but its math proficiency was 20%, below the state’s 38%. SchoolDigger lists Encinal at the 72nd percentile with four stars.

Across the same six schools with results in both years, average scores rose from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026 by about 1 percentage point in ELA, 3 in math, and 2 in science; the gap with the state narrowed in ELA and math but widened in science. School-level changes differed: Encinal improved about 11 points in ELA, while Live Oak High fell about 11; in science, Live Oak High rose about 12 points while Luther Elementary fell about 10. SchoolDigger’s rankings also moved in different directions: Live Oak Middle rose from the 57th to the 65th percentile between 2023–2024 and 2025–2026, while Live Oak High moved from the 68th to the 57th. As context, all schools reported free/reduced lunch eligible shares for 2024–2025, ranging from about 41% at Sutter Peak Charter Academy to about 90% at Live Oak Alternative; this measure alone does not predict results. Valley Oak Continuation High has no reportable 2025–2026 test scores, so a current-year proficiency comparison is unavailable.
