Summary:
Escalon, California, has six schools serving elementary, middle and high school students, along with charter, alternative and continuation programs. Among the four schools with reported 2025–2026 test results, average proficiency was 47% in English language arts (ELA), 37% in math and 33% in science—2, 1 and 3 percentage points below state results, respectively. The most important takeaway is that schoolwide performance varies considerably, so area averages do not tell the whole story about any one school.
Van Allen Elementary is the clearest current academic standout: it led the reporting schools in math at 51% and science at 42%, and its math score was 26 points above El Portal Middle’s 25%. Escalon High led ELA at 56%, 7 points above the state, and had a 99% graduation rate compared with 88% statewide. El Portal had the lowest reported all-grades ELA and math results, at 35% and 25%—15 and 13 points below the state. Its eighth-grade math score was an exception: 36%, essentially level with the state’s 36%.
Results improved overall for the same four schools from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026: their average rose 3 points in ELA, 4 in math and 4 in science. Dent Elementary made the largest gains in all three subjects, including 16 points in science; Van Allen’s science score fell 12 points but remained above the state. SchoolDigger rankings also moved in different directions: Dent rose from the 46th to the 57th percentile between 2023–2024 and 2025–2026, while El Portal fell from the 52nd to the 37th. Dent and Van Allen had similar 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible measures—50% and 49%—but Van Allen had higher math and science results; their student-teacher ratios were 21.6 and 20.3, respectively. Escalon Charter Academy exceeded state results in all three subjects in 2024–2025. Vista High (Continuation)’s 2025–2026 test scores are suppressed, so current achievement comparisons cannot include it.
