Summary:
85021 has nine high schools, all listed for grades 9–12, with 4,134 students; Sunnyslope High School and Washington High School account for 3,981 students, or 96% of the total. The other seven schools together enroll just 153 students. Only Sunnyslope and Washington have reportable proficiency results, so the other schools’ scores cannot be compared here. The clearest finding is that Sunnyslope leads Washington and is above state results in all three reported subjects.
Sunnyslope stands out academically: its 2025–26 results were 56% in ELA and 48% in math, compared with Washington’s 37% and 34%, respectively. Sunnyslope was 15 percentage points above the state in both subjects; Washington was 4 points below the state in ELA and 1 point above in math. In grade 11 science for 2024–25, Sunnyslope scored 23%, versus Washington’s 13% and the state’s 19%. Graduation rates were also high at Sunnyslope (94%) and Washington (93%), compared with 80% statewide. At the other end, the small Excel Center – Papago reported a 45% graduation rate and 48% dropout rate; it enrolls 19 students.
SchoolDigger’s latest rankings favor Sunnyslope: it ranked 58th of 256, in the 77th percentile with 4 stars, while Washington ranked 125th, in the 51st percentile with 3 stars. Their percentile standings have improved since 2023–24—Sunnyslope from 66 to 77 and Washington from 38 to 51—but these rankings do not show whether test proficiency has risen over time. Sunnyslope’s reported student–teacher ratio is 23.7, slightly higher than Washington’s 22.1, despite its stronger results; this pair does not suggest that a lower ratio guarantees higher scores. The remaining schools’ ratios range from 1.3 to 10.9 where reported, and some are blank, so school size and program differences matter when comparing them.
