Summary

Nettleton High School in Jonesboro, AR, serves 1,054 students in grades 9-12 and is part of the Nettleton School District, which ranks near the bottom of the state. The school faces significant challenges, with 70.68% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, a rate more than double that of nearby high-performing schools like Valley View High School (23.56%) and Brookland High School (25.27%). Despite these economic disadvantages, Nettleton maintains a graduation rate that consistently meets or exceeds the state average (91% in 2024-2025), a notable achievement that sets it apart from similar schools like Trumann High School, which has a lower graduation rate and higher dropout rate.

Academically, Nettleton's test scores are significantly below those of its peers. In the 2025-2026 school year, only 26% of students were proficient in English Language Arts, compared to 51% at Valley View and 45.1% at Brookland. The gap is even wider in science, where Nettleton's 19.8% proficiency in Biology is less than half of Valley View's 58% and Riverside High School's 62.9%. A standout weakness is Geometry, where only 5% of all students were proficient—the lowest rate among nearby schools and far below the state average of 26.4%. For 10th graders, this rate drops to a critical 1.7%. Interestingly, 9th graders show a relative strength in Biology with 35.3% proficiency, suggesting a strong 9th-grade science program, but this gain is not sustained into 10th grade, where proficiency falls to 9.1%.

Nettleton's student-to-teacher ratio of 11.8:1 is lower than the state average and lower than high-performing schools like Brookland (17.1:1) and Valley View (13.5:1), indicating that class size is not the primary driver of academic challenges. Per-student spending of $12,088 is in the middle of the pack for the area, similar to Valley View ($12,087) but less than struggling schools like Trumann ($14,163) and Bay High School ($15,020). This suggests that the school's struggles are more about how resources are used in a high-poverty context rather than a lack of funding. Nettleton shares similar challenges with The Academies at Jonesboro High School, located just 3.6 miles away, which also serves a highly disadvantaged population and has low test scores, highlighting systemic issues in the area's economically challenged districts.

Open Quote The administration at Nettleton Schools is so bad we decided to home school our student in the 9th grade. We pulled our A student out because of the bullying in the school, sex in the bathrooms, (my son walked in on it once), drugs in the hallways (found by a teacher one day) and the rise of gang power over the principals and people in charge. When we brought any issue to the Superintendent, it was met with references to the handbook that this kind of behavior is not allowed. But it is and is even promoted. If a student is attacked by another student, the student attacked is equally punished along with the attacker. The school takes the same stance as some do in a rape case. The victim must has asked for it, therefore guilty too. Close Quote
