Summary

Mountain Pine Elementary School in Mountain Pine, AR, serves 320 students from Pre-K through 6th grade and is the only elementary school in the Mountain Pine School District, a small, rural community where every student faces economic challenges.

Academically, Mountain Pine Elementary struggles significantly compared to nearby schools. In the most recent school year, proficiency rates in math (20.5%), science (23.7%), and English language arts (20%) were roughly half the state average. This is a stark contrast to Jessieville Elementary School, located just 10 miles away, which achieves math proficiency rates nearly four times higher (78.6%) despite serving a similarly high-poverty population. Even when compared to Oaklawn STEM Magnet School, which also has 100% economic disadvantage, Mountain Pine trails in every subject. The school’s state ranking has also declined, falling from the 28th percentile to the 10th percentile over the past few years. Notably, the school spends a relatively high $14,668 per student—more than high-performing Jessieville Elementary ($12,448)—yet this investment has not translated into strong academic outcomes, suggesting the need for targeted instructional strategies.

There are a few bright spots and areas of concern. Sixth graders at Mountain Pine show relative strength, achieving the school’s highest proficiency rates in English language arts (29.4%) and science (32.4%), the latter approaching the state average. However, a severe "5th grade slump" is evident, with proficiency rates dropping to just 9.4% in ELA and 11.6% in math—the lowest in the school. This grade level requires urgent attention. The comparison to Jessieville Elementary is particularly telling: despite nearly identical poverty rates, Jessieville is a top-performing school (91st percentile), proving that high-poverty schools can achieve much better results. This gap is likely driven by differences in school leadership, instructional quality, and curriculum, offering a potential roadmap for improvement at Mountain Pine.

Open Quote Very behind academically. Even starting in kindergarten. My son was coming home with work that most 4 year olds could easily do, and his class progressed very slowly. It seemed as though this was not due to the needs of the majority of the students in his class, they were all more than capable of progressing faster. The entire school's test scores are abysmal, it rather seems as though they aren't funded well enough to hire decent teachers. I went to Mtn. Pine growing up K-12 as well, and was not at all prepared for college when i attempted it. I moved my children to a different school, with the same size and funding, with much better results. Homeschool is a better option than Mountain Pine if that is a possibility for you. If you have no choice or are low-income, I would suggest supplementing your childs education as best as you can from home with other resources. I am very sad that I have to give a huge thumbs down to my alma mater. Close Quote
