Summary

Harry C. Morrison Elementary School is a public school in Fort Smith, AR, serving 493 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Fort Smith School District, and it has recently shown a dramatic academic turnaround that sets it apart from nearby schools.

The most notable finding is a sharp increase in test scores from the 2023-2024 school year to the 2025-2026 school year. For example, math proficiency rose from 13.5% to 38.2%, and science proficiency jumped from 14.2% to 31.1%. This improvement is much steeper than what peers like Sutton Elementary School or Howard Elementary School experienced. A standout bright spot is 4th-grade math, where 54.9% of students are proficient—significantly higher than the district average of 41.6% and every other nearby Fort Smith school. However, the school faces a "5th-grade cliff," with proficiency dropping sharply from 4th to 5th grade in all subjects, such as math falling from 54.9% to 25.3%. This suggests a need to examine curriculum or support for older students.

Compared to schools in the nearby Van Buren School District, like Parkview Elementary School, Morrison still lags behind in overall performance, but its recent gains are promising. Interestingly, Morrison spends less per student ($11,686) than some lower-performing Fort Smith schools, indicating that its improvement may stem from changes in instruction or leadership rather than funding alone. While the school remains in the bottom 25% of Arkansas elementary schools, the positive trajectory and the success in 4th-grade math offer hope for continued growth.

Open Quote Terrible school! There is little to no, mostly no parent teacher communication. They are teaching my child the exact same things he already learned last year in kindergarten at a way better school. If you ever decide to go to the open house at the beginning of the year or any other after school type of program you will have to listen to every word be repeated again in spanish because no one there speaks any english. They have no year books and no awards for students at the end of the year, and the teachers seem extremely lazy as well. There was a day that I was walking to the front to pick my child up after school and spotted a NEEDLE just laying in the grass so I mentioned it to one of the pre k teachers there she did not seem to care what so ever, that was three weeks ago and that needle is still there but has moved and now has the cap off, so that means some child probably picked it up and took off that protective cap. They dont have any concern for your childs safety what so ever obviously, after school first started I witnessed a teacher let a child leave with some meth head that even told the teacher she didnt know this kids name but "was suppose to be picking them up". Absolutely absurd to think they would even let a child leave the school with some random crack head that dosent even know the childs name, from that day on I always make sure im there a few minutes earlier to pick my child up. So what am I trying to say? I guess my point would be that if you care about your child getting a quality education in a safe environment then avoid this school, unless you just dont care.
