Summary

Dierks High School is a small, rural school in Dierks, Arkansas, serving 253 students in grades 7 through 12 as part of the Dierks School District. The school stands out for its exceptionally low student-teacher ratio of 4.6:1, which is far smaller than nearby Dequeen High School (9.4:1) and Nashville High School (7.4:1), suggesting students receive a great deal of individual attention. However, despite this advantage and higher per-student spending ($15,193) than both Dequeen and Nashville, the school has experienced a sharp decline in its state ranking, dropping from the 62nd percentile in 2021-2022 to the 28th percentile in 2025-2026.

One of the most surprising findings is Dierks' unique strength in mathematics. In the 2025-2026 school year, 52.1% of students were proficient in math, outperforming the state average of 44.1% and far exceeding Mineral Springs High School's 21.6% proficiency. This math success, however, contrasts sharply with struggles in other subjects: only 31.5% of students are proficient in English Language Arts and 25.9% in Science, both well below state averages. The school's overall 1-star rating is largely driven by these weaknesses, particularly in Geometry where just 10.5% of students meet standards compared to 26.4% statewide.

Interestingly, while test scores have fallen, the school's graduation rate has remained stable and above the state average, at 88.3% in 2023-2024 versus the state's 88.9%. This suggests Dierks successfully supports students toward graduation, even as academic proficiency declines. Compared to Mineral Springs—a similarly small, high-poverty school with single-digit proficiency rates—Dierks is in a stronger position, but it still lags behind Nashville, which maintains a 3-star rating with a higher student-teacher ratio and lower spending. The challenge for Dierks is clear: its resources, including small classes and a strong math department, are not yet translating into broad academic improvement across all subjects.
