Summary

Paragould Junior High serves 512 students in grades 7 and 8 within the Paragould School District, and it is notable that 100% of its students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds—a key factor when comparing its performance to nearby schools.

The school’s standout strength is its Algebra program: in the 2025-2026 school year, 71.2% of students taking the Algebra exam were proficient, far exceeding the state average of 36.9%. This success is consistent, with rates reaching 94.8% in 2023-2024. However, proficiency in other subjects lags behind, with English Language Arts at 30.9%, Reading at 32.5%, and Science at 36.1%—all below state averages. The school also underperforms its own district in these areas, suggesting a possible drop-off as students transition from Oak Grove Middle School (grades 5-6). Despite these challenges, Paragould Junior High benefits from a favorable student-teacher ratio of 13.3:1, which is smaller than many nearby schools like Brookland Middle School (18.5:1) and Greene City Technical Middle School (18:1).

Interestingly, Paragould Junior High spends less per student ($10,775) than comparable schools like Annie Camp Junior High School ($13,005) and Nettleton Junior High School ($12,135), despite serving a higher-need population. A stark contrast emerges when comparing it to Greene City Technical Junior High School, just 2.5 miles away, which has a 4-star rating and proficiency rates nearly double in math and science—likely reflecting its lower poverty rate (44% disadvantaged). Overall, Paragould Junior High shows a remarkable ability to excel in Algebra but faces systemic hurdles in building broader academic skills, making it a school of contrasts where targeted programs shine amid broader challenges.

Open Quote My oldest child attended the jr. high before we moved and it was a fantastic experience. The school worked with us and showed lots of interest in my child's sucess. Overall I really liked ALL of the schools. My other children attended the elementary and middle schools and they were fantastic also. Close Quote
