Summary

Rolling Hills Elementary School in Huntsville, AL, serves 483 students in grades PK through 6 and is part of the Huntsville City district.

Rolling Hills is a school in transition. While its test scores are currently below both district and state averages, the school has shown steady improvement over the past several years. The school's overall state ranking has climbed from the 8th percentile in 2022-2023 to the 17th percentile in 2025-2026. This upward trend is visible in specific subjects too—3rd-grade math proficiency more than doubled from 10% to 28% over that period, and 5th-grade English jumped from 28% to 52%. One of the school's standout successes is its English Language Learner (ELL) program, which now ranks in the 64th percentile statewide—a remarkable turnaround from the 11th percentile just two years prior. However, challenges remain. Chronic absenteeism, while improved from 23.8% to 15.5%, is still nearly double the district average. The school also has a higher student-teacher ratio (17:1) than nearby schools like Blossomwood Elementary (15.8:1) and Chapman Elementary (15.1:1).

When comparing Rolling Hills to other schools in the area, the contrast is stark. Just 1.31 miles away, the magnet Academy for Science & Foreign Language ranks in the 79th percentile statewide, with 77% of its 3rd graders proficient in math versus 28% at Rolling Hills. This disparity is common when comparing neighborhood schools to magnet programs, which often attract families with different resources. It's worth noting that Rolling Hills is not the lowest-performing school in its immediate vicinity—Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary and Highlands Elementary rank even lower. The school also shows a notable gender gap, with male students ranking in the 27th percentile statewide compared to female students in the 9th percentile. For parents, the key takeaway is that Rolling Hills is a school making genuine progress, with a strong ELL program and improving academics, but it still faces significant hurdles around attendance and math instruction that will require continued focus.

Open Quote Not the best, not the worst. We moved to this district this past year and were disappointed to look up the school and find it was not so great. However, it is apparent that it is a work in progress and they are striving to make it better. I will say the school has very involved parents who are enthusiastic about and devoted to all the children! Close Quote
