Fayette Elementary School in Fayette, AL, serves 529 students from Pre-K through 4th grade as part of the Fayette County school district, and it has recently climbed to a 3-star rating (55th percentile) after two challenging years.

The most exciting news for parents is the school's dramatic turnaround in supporting students who need extra help. In just two years, Fayette Elementary has gone from ranking in the bottom 4% statewide for both special education students and African American students to ranking in the top quartile (77th and 74th percentiles, respectively). This suggests that new intervention strategies are working. The school also excels at getting kids to school—its chronic absenteeism rate of 9.8% is better than both the district (12.6%) and state (12.0%) averages, and it has improved by nearly 8 percentage points in two years. Third graders are also performing well in English, with 75.36% scoring proficient, well above the state average of 64.75%.

However, there is one clear area of concern: 4th grade math. Only 28.74% of 4th graders are proficient, which is roughly 14 points below both the district and state averages. This is a sharp drop from 3rd grade math (50.72% proficiency), and the decline is much steeper than what nearby schools experience. For example, Berry Elementary (same district) actually improves from 52.17% to 61.9% across those grades, and Winfield Elementary maintains much higher scores overall. Interestingly, the same 4th graders are performing above average in science (55.17% proficient), which suggests the issue is specific to math instruction, not a general 4th grade problem. With attendance improving, strong early literacy, and remarkable gains for previously underserved students, Fayette Elementary appears to be on an upward trajectory—if it can crack the 4th grade math puzzle, it could continue climbing the rankings.
