Summary

Brantley High School in Brantley, AL, serves approximately 572 students in grades PK-12 as part of the Crenshaw County school district, with a majority of students (64.3%) qualifying for free or reduced lunch.

One of Brantley's standout strengths is its graduation rate. At 92.3% for 2024-2025, it dramatically outpaces Luverne High School's 77.1% and even exceeds the state average of 91.5%. This is especially impressive given the school's high poverty rate. Brantley also shows strong early-grade academics, particularly in elementary math and English. For example, 3rd grade math proficiency reached 63.2% in 2025-2026, well above the state's 44.9%, and 3rd grade English hit 73.7%, beating the state by 9 points. However, a significant challenge emerges in middle school math. Proficiency drops dramatically from a strong 41.2% in 6th grade to just 2.3% in 7th grade (2024-2025) and 6.1% in 8th grade (2025-2026). This "middle school cliff" persists into high school, where only 9.1% of 11th graders are proficient in math. This creates a paradox: students are graduating at high rates, but many are not demonstrating grade-level proficiency in core subjects by the time they leave.

Chronic absenteeism, while improving (down from 32.0% to 22.4% in one year), remains nearly double the state average of 12.0%. This is a stark contrast to Zion Chapel High School, just 14.5 miles away, which boasts a 5.1% absenteeism rate and outperforms Brantley in nearly every academic metric, despite having a higher student-teacher ratio. Brantley also spends more per student ($10,311) than either Luverne ($8,903) or Zion Chapel ($8,673), yet secondary outcomes lag behind. The school's clear path forward involves targeted middle school math intervention, continued focus on attendance, and studying its own successful elementary practices to replicate them at higher grade levels.
