Summary

Red Level School is a public PK-12 school in Red Level, AL, serving 535 students within the Covington County district, which holds a 3-star rating. The school has a significant portion of students receiving free or reduced lunch (63.74%), yet it has shown remarkable progress in student engagement and retention over the past few years.

The most encouraging news for parents is the school's strong commitment to keeping students on track. The graduation rate has climbed steadily to 93.3% for 2024-2025, which is above the state average of 91.5% and slightly better than nearby Pleasant Home School (92.5%). Even more impressive is the dramatic reduction in chronic absenteeism, which dropped from a concerning 18.3% in 2022-2023 to just 7.1% in 2024-2025—well below the state average of 12.0%. This suggests a school that is successfully creating a welcoming, stable environment where students want to show up and stay. Early literacy is also a clear strength, with 3rd-grade English proficiency at 71.79% for 2025-2026, outpacing the state average of 64.75%.

However, the academic picture becomes more challenging in the middle and high school years. While early grades often meet or exceed state averages, proficiency rates drop sharply in 7th and 8th grades. For example, 7th-grade math proficiency was just 12.82% in 2025-2026 (compared to 24.46% statewide), and 8th-grade English proficiency was 48.57% versus 58.53% statewide. This trend continues into high school, with 11th-grade math proficiency remaining consistently low. When compared to McKenzie High School, located just 11.5 miles away in Butler County, Red Level trails significantly in most subjects despite similar economic demographics—for instance, McKenzie's 4th-grade math proficiency was 75.68% versus Red Level's 34.15%. The takeaway: Red Level excels at keeping students engaged and graduating, but families should be aware that academic support in upper grades, particularly in math and science, may require extra attention.
