Summary

Academy Charter School is a K–8 charter school in Palmer, Alaska, serving 268 students in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District, and it currently holds the #2 ranking among 166 Alaska elementary schools — a 99th-percentile, 5-star result that follows four consecutive years of top-6 statewide finishes.

Academy's academic proficiency is dramatically above district and state averages. In English language arts, 68.3% of Academy students are proficient, compared with 41.5% for the district and 32.9% statewide. Math is the school's signature strength, with 79.6% proficiency — roughly double the district rate of 42.0% and about 2.5 times the state rate of 32.2%. Science proficiency is 79.3%, versus 51.0% district-wide and 37.8% statewide. Strong results appear at every grade level; even the school's relative dip in 6th grade (65.6% math and 56.3% ELA proficiency) is far above district and state averages. Subgroup data are equally impressive: both girls and boys rank in the top handful of schools statewide, and low-income students — when present in the school's small population — have ranked #2 or #5 in the state in recent years. Academy has sustained this excellence for four consecutive years, climbing from a mid-tier ranking of #68 in 2016–2017 to its current #2 position.

Compared with nearby schools, John Shaw Elementary — the closest neighboring challenger in math — trails Academy by about 12 points (67.6% vs. 79.6%). Fronteras Charter School posts slightly higher science proficiency (83.7% vs. 79.3%) but lags by roughly 24 points in math and 8 in ELA. Academy also has a notably low student-teacher ratio of 13.0 and relatively high per-pupil spending of $16,769. One important context for parents: Academy serves very few low-income students (1.15% free/reduced-price lunch population), while many nearby traditional schools report 30–60%. When Academy does serve low-income students, they rank among the best in the state — a strong signal that the school's academic approach works well for students from a range of backgrounds.

Open Quote This is an amazing school if you have advanced students! The teachers and staff truly want whats best for EVERY child! Plus class sizes are smaller so your child gets more one on one attention! Close Quote

Open Quote This school challenges each child to their ability level. Children do not work at the level of the lowest child in the class. If you want your child to be challenged, while enjoying learning, send them to this school. The teachers are professionals and seem to enjoy teaching your child and they truly love what they do. They don't just teach the standards, they surpass them. The kids aren't even aware that they are reaching higher and higher and learning and understanding more and more. Nothing but good comments for the way this school teaches my kids. Close Quote
