Summary

Akteach is an alternative K-12 school in Kodiak, AK, serving 199 students in the Kodiak Island Borough School District, a mid-tier Alaska district. It is far larger than its neighboring alternatives, Port Lions School, Chiniak School, and Ouzinkie School, each of which enrolls fewer than 30 students. Its biggest academic strength is English language arts (ELA): 60.87% of its students tested proficient in 2025–2026, far above the district's 39.55% and the state's 32.89%. This is not a one-year fluke, as Akteach has outperformed both district and state in ELA every year since 2022–2023. By contrast, Port Lions School reported just 18.75% proficiency in ELA, so Akteach students read at markedly higher levels than peers in some nearby rural schools.

Mathematics is the opposite story and the school's biggest concern. Only 30.23% of Akteach students were proficient in math in 2025–2026, below the district (32.54%) and state (32.20%). The brightest story is graduation. Akteach's graduation rate has climbed from 50% in 2020–2021 to 90% in 2024–2025, a 40-point improvement that now nearly matches the district's 91.8%. Nearby Port Lions School and Ouzinkie School reported 100% graduation rates in 2024–2025, but those numbers come from very small graduating classes. For an alternative school that serves students often needing credit recovery and nontraditional pathways, this is a significant achievement. One caveat for families reviewing the data: Akteach's reported student-teacher ratio of 199 in 2024–2025 looks like a reporting error, and its free/reduced lunch data is incomplete, so staffing and poverty comparisons should be read cautiously.
