Summary

Fire Lake Elementary is a small pre-K through 6th-grade school in Eagle River, AK, serving about 195 students within the Anchorage School District. It sits among a cluster of nearby elementary schools that are generally high-performing, which makes its mid-pack state ranking stand out.

Fire Lake’s strongest academic area is science, with 52.6% of students proficient — well above the district average of 39.1% and the state average of 37.8%. English Language Arts is also a relative plus, at 41.9% proficiency, beating the district (36.0%) and state (32.9%) averages. Math, however, is a clear weak spot: only 34.3% of students are proficient, and that number has dropped every year since 2022-23, when it was 45.3%. Most neighboring schools score far higher in math, such as Ravenwood Elementary at 72.7% or Eagle Academy Charter School at 76.1%. Fire Lake’s grade-level data shows 3rd graders below state averages in math (21.9% vs. 33.7%), but by 5th grade students are above state averages in both math and ELA — a pattern suggesting possible cumulative growth, though small cohorts make this hard to confirm.

Fire Lake has a higher poverty rate than most nearby schools, with 39.0% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, compared to 11.4% at Ravenwood or 17.5% at Chugiak Elementary. At the same time, it offers the lowest student-teacher ratio (13.6) and highest per-pupil spending ($19,548) of all comparison schools in the area. While it lags behind top local peers like Homestead Elementary or Alpenglow Elementary in overall rank, it still outperforms Eagle River Elementary in ELA and science. For parents, the key takeaway is that Fire Lake shows genuine strengths in science and reading, but boosting early-grade math achievement would be the single biggest way to raise its standing.

Open Quote I have a now senior in high school that attended Fire Lake from 2nd to 5th grade. The teaches did a great job. It was a difficult time for our son who was trying to overcome many changes in from the first five years of his life. He looks back with admiration on the teachers and staff at Fire Lake.

Our daughter attends Fire Lake and had enjoyed all of her teachers. I have heard stories of some troubled children in her classes. I believe any and all incidents have been handled well. There have not been any negative consequences that have affected my child. We find the teachers and staff quite approachable and easy to work with.

It is not all sunshine and roses, but having children is not meant to be a cake walk. There have been issues in homework, focus and getting along. We recognize our children are not blameless and look to work with the people that take care of our children for eight hours a day while we work. Close Quote

Open Quote One of the worst schools that I have experienced. The principal allows teachers to act inappropriately toward students by yelling, screaming, shaming, and embarrassing them. Students call one teacher in particular a witch and sneak behind her back. This was brought to the principal's attention numerous times and nothing was done about it. The principal decided to cover the scenarios and did not address the situations as they should had been. The teacher should not be teaching students and does not belong in the classroom, given the damage that she does to students' self esteems and concepts. I consider Fire Lake Elementary a mistake and a decision that my child is still working at overcoming. If you consider this school for your child please know that it could negatively impact your child. Close Quote
