Northern Lights ABC K-8 School

Northern Lights ABC K-8 School in Anchorage, AK, serves 582 students in pre-kindergarten through 8th grade and is one of the few schools in its area within the Anchorage School District that carries students through middle school. The school remains a high academic performer — ranked 27th in Alaska at the 84th percentile — though that reflects a step back from its historic top-5 status. Proficiency rates of 62.6% in math, 52.6% in English language arts, and 51.0% in science are all well above district and state averages. About 29% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a lower share than many nearby schools.

What really sets Northern Lights apart is consistently strong math. Proficiency exceeds district averages in every grade level, highlighted by an exceptional 80% rate among 6th graders — more than double the district's 36.2%. These results tower over schools just a mile away: Tudor Elementary ranks 140th statewide with 16.1% math proficiency, and Kasuun Elementary ranks 136th. Yet Northern Lights also belongs to a high-performing neighborhood cluster with Rilke Schule Charter School (#10) and Rogers Park Elementary (#14) — making it a rare academic bright spot in an academically uneven corridor. It achieves this while spending $11,121 per student, thousands less than lower-performing neighboring schools.

Even so, this past year marked a notable dip. Proficiency has slipped from a few years ago — math fell from 74.7% in 2022–2023 to 62.6%, while ELA dropped from 67.2% to 52.6% — even as district averages stayed roughly flat. Rilke Schule Charter School, which trailed Northern Lights a year ago, has now moved ahead. Third-grade reading at 36.8% proficient is a clear weak spot. The school still posts standout results for certain student groups — Asian students ranked #1 in Alaska and low-income students ranked #7 — so its trajectory over the next couple of years will be well worth watching.
