North Star Elementary is a PK–6 school in Anchorage, Alaska, serving 317 students in the Anchorage School District, a district that ranks near the middle of Alaska school districts. For the 2025-2026 school year, it ranks 147th out of 166 Alaska elementary schools — 11th percentile, 1 star — an improvement over recent 0-star results, but still firmly in the bottom tier. Only about 17% of students are proficient in English language arts and science, and about 22% in math, compared with district averages of roughly 33–39%.

North Star Elementary is a high-poverty school: essentially every student qualifies for free or reduced-price meals (about 105%). Yet within a mile or two, several schools rank dramatically higher: Chugach Optional Elementary (7th in the state), Rogers Park Elementary (14th), and Inlet View Elementary (40th) — schools that serve far fewer low-income families. Poverty is a major obstacle, but it does not fully explain the gap: Willow Crest Elementary has nearly the same poverty rate yet posts reading and math proficiency about ten points higher. The school also spends about $20,048 per student — well above the $12,000–$14,500 range at those higher-performing nearby schools — without corresponding gains.

There are modest signs of progress. Math proficiency has risen from about 15% in 2022-2023 to 21.79% in 2025-2026, and 5th-grade math (31.25%) is notably stronger than 3rd- or 4th-grade results. Reading, however, has stagnated, and science scores swing sharply from year to year. Subgroup results are sobering: the school's low-income students perform at the 4th percentile even compared with other low-income students statewide. Hispanic students were a relative bright spot at the 42nd percentile in 2025-2026, though small group sizes make year-to-year swings likely. The school is moving in the right direction yet remains one of the most academically challenged elementary schools in the Anchorage School District.
