Tok School

Tok School is an alternative PK–12 school in Tok, Alaska, within theAlaska Gateway School District, serving 183 students in a rural community where nearly every family is economically disadvantaged. It is the largest of the three area alternative schools, with a student-teacher ratio of roughly 11.4 to 1 and per-pupil spending of about $36,000 – far above Alaska REACH Academy's $22,000, but comparable to Tetlin School's $36,700. Those high costs are typical of remote Alaska schools, but they provide helpful context for interpreting results. Tok School shares a campus with Alaska REACH Academy, yet it is the only school among the three with enough testing data to track academic performance over time.

Tok School consistently outperforms its district while trailing the state in most subjects. In the most recent testing year, English language arts proficiency was 27.5% at Tok School versus 19.4% for the Alaska Gateway School District and 32.9% statewide; math was 23.8% versus 14.4% and 32.2%; and science was 30.6% versus 29.7% and 37.8%. Science has shown real strength – hitting 47.4% the previous year, above the state's 37.9% – and early-grade results are promising, especially 3rd grade math at 50% proficiency, which exceeds both district and state averages. The most persistent weaknesses appear in secondary math and reading, where scores fall further behind state benchmarks as students get older.

Graduation rates at Tok School are erratic, likely reflecting very small cohorts in an alternative setting: the rate jumped from 42.8% in 2023-2024 to 92.8% in 2024-2025, a swing that one or two students can cause. That recent figure beats the district's 84.0% and Alaska REACH Academy's 71.4%, while Tetlin School reports 100% on an even smaller base. At its best, Tok School appears to do more for a high-poverty population than other district schools manage – but the fuller picture is a school whose early-grade and science strengths coexist with meaningful academic gaps in the middle and high school years.
