Scammon Bay School

Scammon Bay School is a small, PK–12 school serving 246 students in the rural western Alaska community of Scammon Bay, operating within the Lower Yukon School District. The entire K-12 population of the village learns in a single building, and essentially every student qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch—a strong sign of the economic challenges families face. Per-pupil spending is about $31,837, which is high by national standards but typical for remote Alaska schools where transportation, staffing, and operations cost far more than in urban areas.

Despite those challenges, Scammon Bay consistently outperforms its district on nearly every measure. Its graduation rate has topped the Lower Yukon School District every year for five straight years—most recently 83.3% versus 77.6% in 2024–2025. Test scores follow a similar pattern: proficiency rates are far below statewide averages, yet Scammon Bay students score roughly three to four times higher than district averages in reading, math, and science. There are also encouraging signs of recent improvement. Math proficiency has climbed from 3.3% in 2022–2023 to 8.9% in 2025–2026, and science proficiency jumped to 11.8% in the latest school year. The school's biggest concern is that academic performance drops noticeably as students move into middle and high school, along with an unusual combination of high graduation rates and low test scores that may reflect differences between the students tested and those who earn diplomas. Overall, Scammon Bay appears to be a relative bright spot within the Lower Yukon School District, though closing the wide academic gap with the rest of Alaska remains a significant challenge.
