Summary

Laurelhurst Elementary School is a public K-5 school serving 272 students in a high-performing Seattle neighborhood, consistently earning a 4-star rating while outperforming state averages in all subjects.

Academically, Laurelhurst is a solid school where students score above the Washington state average, with a particular strength in mathematics that even exceeds the Seattle School District No. 1 average. However, it's important for parents to understand the local context: the school serves a more economically diverse population than most of its immediate neighbors, and its test scores, while strong, are generally lower than those at nearby elite schools like Bryant Elementary School, McDonald International School, and John Stanford International School. A notable finding is that the school appears particularly effective in supporting its students from lower-income families, achieving better outcomes than many schools with similar demographics, such as the nearby Sand Point Elementary.

The school has shown a gradual decline in its statewide ranking percentile over recent years, and there is a consistent performance gap where female students rank lower than male students, indicating a potential area for targeted support. With moderate per-student spending and a favorable student-teacher ratio compared to some peers, Laurelhurst represents a stable, good choice that faces the unique challenge of being compared to some of the highest-ranked schools in the state while successfully serving a broader cross-section of its community.

Open Quote Avoid Laurelhurst Elementary. Despite the fact that Seattle Public Schools has told me directly that they have received countless complaints about the principal, she's still standing. This school derailed my family for the better part of a year. There are two levels of problems: the pathologically passive and ineffective principal and the bubble of the community. Mean, entitled parents produce mean, entitled children. I can't imagine feeling more demoralized than we felt when my children attended Laurelhurst. Close Quote
