Summary

Hazelwood Elementary School is a public K-5 school serving about 500 students in the Auburn School District, ranking solidly in the middle of all Washington elementary schools and showing recent improvement in its state rating.

The school has clear academic strengths, particularly in mathematics where it consistently outperforms both its district and the state average. It also shows notable effectiveness in supporting students with special needs and those from lower-income families. While its overall performance has declined from higher historical levels, the most recent data indicates a positive trend of stabilization and recovery. Compared to other schools in the area, Hazelwood ranks third among its Auburn district neighbors, performing significantly better than several nearby schools like Dick Scobee Elementary School and Chinook Elementary School, and it also outperforms all listed schools from the neighboring Kent School District.

Hazelwood achieves these results with relatively efficient spending per student. Performance varies by grade, with strong math scores in 3rd grade and strong English scores in 5th grade, suggesting the school is navigating specific challenges at different levels. Its ability to outperform the lower-ranked Auburn district, especially in key subject areas and for specific student groups, makes it a notable option for families in the community.

Open Quote My son attends first grade at Hazelwood and it is an excellent school. The teachers are great and are very welcoming of parents into the school to be part of the students education. Their programs such as LAP provide students with excellent learning tools to perfect their reading and Math skills. I have been very impressed so far. Close Quote
