Summary

Sewells Point Elementary is a public elementary school in Norfolk, Virginia, serving 523 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Norfolk City Public Schools district, which has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Sewells Point Elementary has shown a declining trend in its statewide ranking, dropping from the top 20% of Virginia elementary schools in 2015-2016 to the bottom 50% in recent years. The school's performance on SOL (Standards of Learning) tests is mixed, with strengths in 3rd and 4th-grade English Reading but significant weaknesses in Mathematics, where 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade proficiency rates are significantly below the state average. The school has a high percentage of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, with over 100% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and a relatively high percentage of military-connected students.

Compared to nearby schools in the Norfolk City Public Schools district, Sewells Point Elementary's academic performance is generally on par with or slightly better than schools like Crossroads PreK-8 School and Suburban Park Elementary. However, the school lags behind higher-performing schools in the district, such as Larchmont Elementary and Walter Herron Taylor Elementary. Addressing the school's high chronic absenteeism rates and supporting the unique needs of its diverse student population could be important areas of focus for improvement.

Open Quote The Principal and Vice Principal at this school are very involved and committed to the students education. They listen to parents concerns and work with them in finding a solution. They have a great speech program, and the referral process was very easy. The Pre Kindergarten teachers are awesome, my little 4 year old is learning to read! The curriculum is fast paced and intense, but they do a good job of teaching to each students individual needs. The Kindergarten teachers are great as well, especially Ms. Thornhill. And the first grade splits up for reading time into leveled groups to make sure the advanced students don't get slowed down and the average students don't get left behind. My three children are learning ALOT here! I am very pleased with this school. Close Quote
