The school is part of the Henrico County Public Schools district, which is ranked 89 out of 129 school districts in Virginia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Fair Oaks Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Virginia elementary schools, with a ranking between 1007-1102 out of 1100-1114 schools over the past 8 years. The school's performance on SOL (Standards of Learning) tests is significantly below the Henrico County and Virginia state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the percentage of 3rd-grade students proficient or better in Math at Fair Oaks (31.67%) was less than half the Henrico County (64.2%) and Virginia (72.89%) averages. The school also has a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 90.76% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2023-2024 school year.

The nearby schools in the Henrico County district, such as Arthur Ashe Junior Elementary, Harvie Elementary, and Cashell Donahoe Elementary, generally perform better than Fair Oaks on academic measures, with higher SOL proficiency rates and better statewide rankings. However, these nearby schools also have high percentages of students from low-income backgrounds, ranging from 91.26% to 93.8% free/reduced-price lunch recipients. Despite the relatively high per-student spending of around $10,700 at Fair Oaks Elementary and the improved student-teacher ratio, the school continues to face significant challenges in terms of academic performance and student demographics.

Open Quote Fair Oaks gets a bad wrap and it is such an amazing school. Our son came from a private school in Hanover. We didn't hear the best things about FOE but after doing the private thing and not be overly happy with that route we thought we would give it a try. My husband and I did our research, spoke to the staff and went on a tour before even discussing with our son. Then we went back and took him after we had made up our minds that this was the best route to go. We LOVE the school! It is much smaller than most elementary schools and the staff is so amazing. So like they say, don't judge a book by its cover b/c this was something we did and our only regret is not starting our son there two years sooner! Close Quote

Open Quote I'm not crazy about this school as I have two children who attend I believe my opinion to be fair and honest. The receptionist are very rude when you call in about any type of matter. Also while the teachers are sweet....I don't feel like they spend time focusing on materials for growth and learning. But rather rushing through to insure that the child pass's enough for not year. I feel like the standards aren't up to the other elementary school in this area. I my best friends daughter attends the other school and comparing them I found that she is doing far more advanced things than my fifth grader and she is only in third grade! I hope that it improves as the teachers atleast the ones my children have had these past two years thus far seem sweet and cooperative. Close Quote
