Summary

Crestwood Elementary is a public elementary school in Springfield, Virginia, serving 547 students in grades PK-6. While part of the highly-ranked Fairfax County Public Schools district, Crestwood has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Virginia elementary schools, with a 0 or 1 out of 5 star rating from SchoolDigger.

Crestwood's academic performance is a significant concern, with proficiency rates on Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests that are substantially lower than the Fairfax County and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 3rd grade math, Crestwood's proficiency rate is just 53.85% compared to 75.55% for Fairfax County and 72.89% for Virginia. The school also struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 10.5% to 19.3% over the past few years. Additionally, Crestwood has a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 72.58% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

When compared to nearby schools like Keene Mill Elementary, Forestdale Elementary, and West Springfield Elementary, Crestwood's performance is notably weaker, with much higher proficiency rates and lower chronic absenteeism. This suggests that factors beyond just student demographics, such as school leadership, teaching quality, and resource allocation, may be contributing to Crestwood's struggles. Despite the school's challenges, there is a need for a comprehensive review and targeted interventions to address the underlying issues and improve educational outcomes for all students.

Open Quote Don't be fooled by the varied demographic makeup of this school or the lower than average test scores (oftentimes a language barrier issue). This school has the best staff, teachers, and principal. My son has been attending Crestwood the past three years and we think it's great - a real gem of a school. We had the option of going the private school route or to attend a different Fairfax elementary school but opted to stay with Crestwood. As a parent, I am pleased. Close Quote
