Summary

J.A. Chalkley Elementary is a public elementary school in Chesterfield, Virginia, serving 868 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Chesterfield County Public Schools district.

Despite being part of a district ranked 71 out of 129 in Virginia, J.A. Chalkley Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of Virginia elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on state assessments. The school's proficiency rates in math and reading range from 37.6% to 57.02%, compared to 66.93% to 73.52% for the district and state. This low academic performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students, who perform in the bottom 50% of Virginia schools in those categories. The school also faces challenges with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 15.6% to 23.1%, and relatively low per-student spending, between $6,167 and $7,006.

When compared to nearby schools within the Chesterfield County Public Schools district, J.A. Chalkley Elementary generally performs worse academically. However, the nearby schools in the Richmond City Public Schools district, which have similar demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, also struggle academically, suggesting that broader systemic factors may be at play. Addressing the challenges faced by J.A. Chalkley Elementary will require a comprehensive, data-driven approach to improve instructional practices, support student and family engagement, and ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities.

Open Quote I was assigned to JAC ES as an itinerate resource teacher and it was my home school. From the first week, I worked there, I was confronted with things I wish no one ever had to deal with again. Administrative negligence, looking over behaviors and violence in the classroom, like throwing chairs and desks, kids choking each other, stabbing other students with pencils, and even at one time in the year a kid brought ammunition from a firearm. The Admin walked on eggshells with behaviors because of the ages of the kids, but the teachers were the ones being abused and putting up with it all. Worst school in CCPS. Close Quote
