Summary

Baker-Butler Elementary is a public elementary school located in Charlottesville, Virginia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 735 students. The school is part of the Albemarle County Public Schools district, which is ranked 47th out of 129 school districts in Virginia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Baker-Butler Elementary consistently performs above the Albemarle County and Virginia state averages in standardized test scores across various subjects and grade levels. In the 2024-2025 school year, the school's 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students scored significantly higher than the district and state averages in Mathematics, English Reading, and Science. For example, in 5th-grade Mathematics, Baker-Butler had 85.47% of students proficient or better, compared to 73.62% for Albemarle County and 71.56% for Virginia. The school's English Language Learner (ELL) students also consistently rank among the top in the state, with a 5-star rating in the 2024-2025 school year.

However, Baker-Butler has seen a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism rates, rising from 7.6% in 2021-2022 to 19.3% in 2022-2023. This is an area of concern that the school and district should address, as high chronic absenteeism can negatively impact student learning and academic outcomes. When compared to nearby schools in the Albemarle County district, such as Mary Carr Greer Elementary and Woodbrook Elementary, Baker-Butler generally outperforms them in academic test scores and student subgroup performance. However, Broadus Wood Elementary and Hollymead Elementary demonstrate stronger academic performance in several areas.

Open Quote Amazing school from the administration to the teachers to the PTO. Very satisfied with our Baker Butler elementary school experience. The teachers care and are highly qualified. This is a great school. My kids love going to school everyday! They are learning so much more than just the basics. They learn about diversity, respect and manners! Close Quote

Open Quote This large school needs major improvments in teaching, classroom orgnization, programs that reach the middle students who are ignored. Close Quote

Open Quote The academic expectatations and standards are high. I applaud that aspect of this school tremendously. However, the school is so socio-economically and racially misrepresented, that its atmosphere and approach to education is extremely bias. Therefore, it may be detrimental to the development of the "whole" child apart from his/her academic growth. Close Quote
