Summary

Hidden Cove Steam Academy is an elementary school in San Antonio, TX, serving 453 students in grades PK-5 within the Southwest Independent School District (Isd), a district that faces significant challenges. The school has a 1-star state rating (22nd percentile) for the 2025-2026 school year, reflecting a fragile recovery from a low point in the 8th percentile in 2023-2024. While the school's name emphasizes STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), its science performance is a critical weakness—only 3.17% of 5th graders were proficient in science in 2024-2025, far below the district (16.63%) and state (29.57%) averages. This is the lowest science proficiency rate among all nearby schools with available data.

Despite these challenges, Hidden Cove has notable strengths. Its bilingual program is a standout success: in 2024-2025, 80% of 4th graders taking the STAAR Reading test in Spanish were proficient, and 60% were proficient in math—dramatically outperforming district and state averages. The school also boasts a favorable student-teacher ratio of 12.4:1, the lowest among nearby schools like Indian Creek Elementary (14.4:1) and Sky Harbour Elementary (14.6:1), and much better than schools in the neighboring South San Antonio Independent School District (Isd), such as Five Palms Elementary (19.8:1). This suggests potential for more individualized attention, though it hasn't yet translated into top-tier academic results.

Hidden Cove's performance varies by subgroup: male students (35th percentile) and special education students (48th percentile) are doing relatively better than the school's overall rank, while female students (11th percentile) and gifted and talented students (16th percentile) need more targeted support. The school's per-student spending ($12,250) is higher than many nearby schools, but this investment hasn't yet closed the gap with higher-performing neighbors like Lackland Elementary, which serves a very different demographic and achieves state rankings in the 66th-72nd percentile. Hidden Cove's primary task is to leverage its small class sizes and successful bilingual strategies to build a more consistent academic program across all grades and subjects, especially in science.

Open Quote My community is considered low-income, including myself as I am a college student and single mother taking care of my kids by myself financially. With that being said I do not appreciate an employee of Hidden Cove Elementary making unnecessary comments such as my house looks like no one lives there, looks ABANDONED, no one answered the door, hmm no one answered the door is probably because I was at school furthering my education or work to provide for my kids that I'm doing alone! I know what the house looks like, why do you think I'm going to school?! To graduate, get my degree, make the big bucks, and move into a bigger, better house that we can call home and my hard work will pay off! You work with kids and are an adult so you SHOULD know not to make those kind of comments. That's not the worst part, the worst part where you messed up is saying that IN-FRONT of my child! Okay, you obviously have a decent income since you completed school and working at one to pay your bills and live in your nice house, but technically rubbing your income in peoples faces is something that you just DON'T DO. When I was in elementary school, I was taught "If you don't have anything nice to say than don't say anything at all." HELLO, we as adults are supposed to be that leading example. I hope when you get home and are eating your steak and potatoes, slip into your luxury nightgown, put on your expensive cream, watch Netflix on your big-screen, while sitting on your big comfy sofa, you are thinking about what you said to a low-income family!
