Summary

C E King High School is a large public high school in Houston, TX, serving 3,716 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Sheldon Independent School District (Isd), where 77% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. After a decade of ranking in the bottom 25th percentile of Texas high schools, the school has shown a promising turnaround, jumping to the 33rd percentile and earning a 2-star rating for the first time in years. This upward trend is more significant than what nearby schools like North Shore Senior High (which dropped to the 39th percentile) or KIPP Northeast College Preparatory (which improved only slightly to the 36th percentile) have experienced.

The school demonstrates notable strengths in specific areas. It consistently performs well in Biology and U.S. History, with proficiency rates close to the district average, and its support for English Language Learners (ELL) has improved dramatically from the 32nd to the 51st percentile. Additionally, C E King boasts a strong and improving graduation rate of 91.7%, which exceeds the district average and far surpasses North Forest High School (81.6%) and Kase Academy (76.5%). However, the school still faces challenges in core subjects like Algebra I and English I, where proficiency rates lag behind the state average.

While the turnaround is real, it remains fragile, and the school's per-student spending of $10,820 is in line with peers like Summer Creek High School ($8,755), suggesting that resource allocation and instructional strategies are key areas for continued focus. For parents, C E King offers a clear trajectory of improvement, strong support for ELL students, and a high graduation rate, making it a school worth watching as it builds on its recent gains.

Open Quote Has the potential to be a great school due to it's AP teachers, but thanks to the curriculum the school board imposes upon the students, I feel like we're being held back from everything that we could possibly learn as students. Close Quote

Open Quote C.E king is a disgusting school. It used to be good but then it went straight downhill. The students are rude and they've basically driven out all the outstanding teachers. It's a joke here. If you have a chance to avoid this school do it. Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers there do not want to teach the children and honestly there are a lot of teachers that can hardly speak proper enough to even teach the child. They are there for a paycheck only, I asked one of the teachers what he was there for and he said if the children had a question then he could answer it. SO I guess he gets paid for supervising the class. Come on, this is what is wrong with our world today, it is schools like this not teaching our children, not wanting to take the time to teach the children, not getting them ready to go into the world. I think maybe they should have higher standards when hiring these teachers. Close Quote
