Summary

Richardson West Technology And Arts Magnet is a 7th and 8th-grade middle school in Richardson, TX, serving 771 students as part of the Richardson Independent School District (Isd), and it consistently ranks among the top 20% of Texas middle schools, currently placing in the 81st percentile statewide.

This school stands out for its exceptional academic performance, particularly in social studies, where 52.75% of 8th graders are proficient—far exceeding the district and state averages. It also boasts a very low dropout rate of just 0.6%, compared to the district's 2.3%. A unique feature is that all 7th graders are accelerated into Algebra I, a high school-level course, which drives strong math outcomes. When compared to nearby schools, Richardson West performs on par with other top-tier magnets like Westwood Math Science Leadership Magnet (81st percentile) and Richardson North J H (84th percentile), while significantly outperforming schools like Liberty J H (7th percentile) and Forest Meadow Middle (31st percentile). The school is particularly effective for White students and Special Education students, both ranking in the 95th percentile statewide.

However, the school faces a critical challenge with its English Language Learner (ELL) students, who rank in the bottom 15% of the state—a significant drop from the previous year. Additionally, performance for Hispanic students and those from low socio-economic backgrounds has shown year-to-year volatility, indicating that while the school can achieve high results for these groups, it has not yet developed a fully consistent system to ensure top-level performance for all students every year. Despite this, the school's overall stability and strong magnet program make it a compelling choice for families seeking a rigorous academic environment.

Open Quote Bullying is definitely a problem. Nothing is done about it. The teachers are ok, in science last year all we did was watch Bill Nye videos, and had one lab 'experiment' where all we did was put salt on a wet potato and watch it dry. Sure, we have chromebooks, but we hardly ever use them, and it makes learning even harder, so really it's just a waste of money. That money could've gone to me actually having a class this semester, instead of just sitting around in the office and using my phone because they can't afford to actually teach me something.
