Summary

Berkner High School is a large, comprehensive public high school in Richardson, TX, serving 2,350 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Richardson Independent School District (Isd). The school has a favorable student-teacher ratio of 13.9 and a graduation rate of 91.2%, which is above the district average and competitive with nearby schools. However, Berkner currently holds a 2-star rating and ranks in the 33rd percentile statewide, reflecting significant academic challenges that have persisted over the last several years.

The most critical issue at Berkner is a severe weakness in Algebra I, where proficiency rates have been alarmingly low—just 11.74% in the 2025-2026 school year. This is roughly one-quarter to one-third of the rates at nearby schools like Naaman Forest High School (37.75%) and N Garland High School (49.21%), and far below the state average of 54.03%. In contrast, Berkner performs relatively well in U.S. History, with proficiency near the state average, suggesting that the school has effective instructional strategies in some subjects but not in foundational math. This disparity is particularly striking because Berkner has a lower percentage of economically disadvantaged students (55.28%) compared to its Garland ISD peers, which typically face greater economic challenges.

Despite its struggles, Berkner shows strengths in serving specific student groups, such as Multi-racial and Gifted and Talented students, who perform well above average. The school also maintains a strong graduation rate, indicating it is effective at keeping students on track to graduate. However, the comparison to N Garland High School, a 4-star school just 2 miles away that outperforms Berkner in every subject despite a higher poverty rate, highlights that the challenges are not insurmountable. This suggests that school-level leadership, curriculum, and instructional practices are key areas for improvement at Berkner.

Open Quote Pretty um, to put it bluntly... rad. I got placed in the highest orchestra there, Allen's orchestras are intense (I went there for 2 years). Berkner's was pretty cough lit, played American Reel, a really complicated really cool sounding song. The popular people in Allen would not like it at Berkner cause they're snooty and turn up their noses at anything less than Erikson middle school or the new Lowery Freshman center building if ya know what I'm saying. Berkner was my favorite high school, I came out of my shell there and made a lot of short term acquaintances, thank God for Collin College amiright (people are nicer in general at College) . But between Allen and Berkner, Berkner wins by a landslide. More than a nose. The people there were cool and I actually enjoyed going there, there are always the snakes no matter what school but the majority of the people were cool👍🏻 Oh yeah, the teachers. They were cool too, they seem happier than the ones at Allen tbh Close Quote

Open Quote I graduated from Berkner in 2010 and i have to say to this day I brag about my high school experience. The exposure, diversity, academics, sports, arts, and social life was something worth writing home about. One of the best schools in the country hands down. Close Quote
