Summary

Mendenhall Elementary is a PK-5 school in Plano, TX, serving 563 students within the highly-rated Plano Independent School District (Isd), though it faces significant challenges as 82.42% of its students are economically disadvantaged—a rate over four times higher than nearby schools like Shepard Elementary (18.75%) and Aldridge Elementary (22.29%).

Academically, Mendenhall ranks in the 31st percentile statewide, with test scores consistently below district and state averages. For example, only 21.15% of 3rd graders were proficient in Math, compared to 55.82% district-wide and 44.33% statewide. This performance is typical of a cluster of high-poverty schools in the district, including Sigler Elementary, Forman Elementary, Memorial Elementary, Barron Elementary, and Meadows Elementary, all with poverty rates between 77% and 87%. Despite a favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.8:1 and higher per-student spending ($12,398) than high-performing peers like Harrington Elementary ($9,519), the school struggles to close the achievement gap.

However, Mendenhall has notable bright spots. Its bilingual program is highly effective, with 5th graders taking the STAAR Spanish test scoring 43.48% proficient in Reading and 37.5% in Math—well above district and state averages. Additionally, the school has made remarkable progress with Special Education students, who now rank in the 66th percentile statewide (up from the 14th percentile two years prior). These successes suggest targeted interventions are working, even as the school faces the systemic challenge of sustaining academic gains in a high-poverty environment.

Open Quote My son who is 8 year's old on the autism spectrum attended Mendenhall. I had to withdraw him in December 2022.

Majority of the teachers here are unprofessional and seem to be unhappy 😒 teaching. They look overwhelmed. The principal is not at all professional she plays as if so..but express your concerns to her and she will not acknowledge it, it makes her upset and starts to talk over your worries and concerns about your child well-being.

I believe the principal is the main problem the reason why teachers are not performing like they should.

I advice you not to enroll your special needs children at Mendenhall Elementary. At least not until current situation changes but for that to happen a new principal must come in.

Front desk secretaries are so unprofessional. Close Quote
