Summary

Briscoe Middle in San Antonio, TX, is a large, high-performing school in the Northside Independent School District (Isd), serving 1,263 students in grades 6-8 with a strong reputation for academic excellence. The school stands out most for its exceptional Algebra I program, where an impressive 93.12% of students were proficient on the End-of-Course exam in the 2025-2026 school year—far exceeding the district average of 53.43% and even surpassing the nearby charter school Basis San Antonio - Jack Lewis Junior Campus (75.61%). This strength in advanced math is paired with consistent outperformance in reading across all grade levels, particularly in 7th and 8th grades, and superior 8th-grade social studies scores that beat both district and state averages.

However, Briscoe's overall math performance reveals a "barbell" effect: while its top students excel in Algebra I, standard grade-level math scores are surprisingly low, with only 13.77% of 7th graders proficient compared to the state average of 29.41%. This suggests the school aggressively accelerates its strongest math students, leaving a larger share of students in standard tracks who may need more support. Additionally, the school has seen a recent decline in effectiveness for English Language Learner and Special Education students, dropping from 4-star ratings to 2-star ratings in 2025-2026, which may contribute to its overall state ranking slipping from a peak of the 90th percentile to the 69th percentile.

Despite spending less per student ($7,336) than many neighbors like Zachry Middle ($10,020), Briscoe achieves superior outcomes, pointing to efficient resource use. The school also maintains an exceptionally low dropout rate of 0.4%, well below the district average of 0.9% and schools like Folks Middle (1.1%). With a lower percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch (24.47%) compared to nearby schools like Jordan Middle (60.97%) and Vale Middle (58.98%), Briscoe serves a more affluent community, which contributes to its strong test scores and ranking.

Open Quote I have never seen a school that has a principle as focused on student achievement and academic success for any of the schools my children have attended. The teachers at this school are courteous and respectful to parents. The academically focused programs such as math, science, English, reading, social studies are taught by teachers who care about the success of their students and really just do a fantastic job. Additional programs whether art, sports, or music are top notch. First year, orchestra won sweepstakes and competed at levels that involved high schools, taking second overall and 1st in there class. The football team took first place winning the district championship, and as far as art goes, I have never seen such talent in that level of education. I would not want my child to attend any other middle school anywhere. I have two daughters, now in college and have spent years traveling the U.S and the world as military. My children have experience school everywhere from Florida to Japan. Briscoe middle school is the best I have ever encountered. Close Quote
