Summary

Mead Elementary is a large, high-poverty elementary school in San Antonio, TX, serving 887 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade as part of the Northside Independent School District (Isd).

The most important news for parents is that Mead Elementary is showing a dramatic and recent turnaround. After several years of struggling academically, the school made a massive leap in the 2025-2026 school year, climbing from the 1st percentile to the 17th percentile statewide. This is a significant improvement that stands out when compared to nearby schools like McDermott Elementary and Glenoaks Elementary, which have remained stagnant or declined. A key driver of this improvement is 4th-grade mathematics, where proficiency rates more than doubled to 48.19%, now surpassing the district average and nearly matching the state average. This is a complete reversal from the previous year and is now higher than several nearby schools, including McDermott and Glenoaks.

Despite this positive trend, challenges remain. Science scores are still very low, with only 3.51% of 5th graders proficient, far below the state average. The school also sits less than two miles from Basis San Antonio Pri- Medical Center Campus, a top-performing charter school in the Basis Texas district, highlighting the educational inequality in the area. While Mead’s per-student spending is higher than Basis, the school serves a population with significantly higher economic needs. The recent upward trend suggests that new strategies may be starting to pay off, offering hope for continued progress.
