Summary

Zachry Middle in San Antonio, TX, is a mid-sized public school serving 1,043 students in grades 6-8 within the Northside Independent School District (Isd), located in a suburban area where about 60% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch.

Zachry is a solid middle-of-the-pack performer, ranking in the 45th percentile statewide, which places it between higher-performing neighbors like Jefferson Middle (64th percentile) and Briscoe Middle (77th percentile) and lower-performing ones like Vale Middle (24th percentile) and Pease Middle (12th percentile). The school's biggest strength is its Algebra I program, where 60% of students are proficient—outpacing both the district and state averages. However, this success contrasts sharply with a persistent weakness in 7th-grade math, where proficiency has hovered around just 5-7% for three years, a challenge shared by many nearby schools. Zachry also shows strong results for African American and Multi-racial students, ranking in the 66th and 65th percentiles respectively, but has seen a troubling drop in support for English Language Learners, falling from the 64th to the 15th percentile in just two years.

This "barbell effect" in math—excellent for advanced students but very weak for on-level 7th graders—suggests resources may be concentrated on top performers while the majority struggle. The school's performance has been inconsistent year-to-year, and its per-student spending of $10,020 is moderate compared to peers. The nearby presence of the high-performing Basis San Antonio - Jack Lewis Junior Campus (91st percentile) adds competitive pressure for families seeking rigorous academics. For parents, Zachry offers a strong math acceleration program but requires careful attention to how the school supports students in core 7th-grade math and English Language Learner programs.

Open Quote I believe the Principal is a respectful and caring person who is trying her best to raise overall Student Body Performance Standards. However, I believe some of her staff are impeding and not helping to move the school and student body in the same overall positive direction. As a parent my first impressions in interacting with various staff personnel ... lead my first impressions to be unfavorable unfortunately...as many upon first meeting them ...come across as curt, unfriendly, and rough around the edges to the point of coming across as rude... and this was their tone.. upon me just meeting them to inquire about general school related information....so in my opinion those staff members are not the best role models to have employed in any school....I believe all the school staff should be respectful in their tone as well as model the best interpersonal behavior they hope to aspire the whole student body with. A respectful and caring staff is what is needed ...even when they need to discipline inappropriate student behavior. Also school staff needs to do a better job to communicate to students that cursing, name calling, and public displays of affection is inappropriate behavior...and should not be condoned nor tolerated. One doesn't have to be rich to have and show class and everyone deserves respect. Close Quote
