Summary

Glenoaks Elementary is a PK-5 public school in San Antonio, TX, serving 457 students within the Northside Independent School District (Isd). The school has faced significant academic challenges over the past decade, with its state ranking declining from the 47th percentile in 2015-2016 to a low of the 3rd percentile in recent years, before a slight recovery to the 17th percentile in the most recent data. A major concern is the school's performance in 5th Grade Science, where only 1.52% of students were proficient in 2024-2025, far below the district average of 23.11% and the state average of 29.57%, and the lowest among nearby schools except for Mead Elementary.

Despite these struggles, Glenoaks has some notable strengths. The school maintains a very favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.1:1, which is lower than most nearby schools like Rhodes Elementary (14.5:1) and Powell Elementary (13.0:1), and significantly lower than high-performing charter schools like Basis San Antonio Pri- Medical Center Campus (19.7:1). Additionally, per-student spending at Glenoaks ($11,391) is on par with its Northside ISD peers, suggesting the school has adequate resources that are not yet translating into strong academic outcomes. A bright spot is the performance of African American students, who ranked in the 61st percentile statewide, a stark contrast to the school's overall performance and indicating effective practices for this group.

When compared to nearby schools serving similar demographics, Glenoaks lags behind. For instance, Idea Ingram Hills Academy, a charter school with a similar percentage of economically disadvantaged students (86.22%), outperforms Glenoaks in nearly every subject and grade level. Other nearby schools like Oak Hills Terrace Elementary (5th percentile) and Mead Elementary (17th percentile) show comparable struggles, while Powell Elementary (24th percentile) performs slightly better. The school's recent slight upward trend is encouraging, but with 3rd-grade Reading (48%) close to the district average (51.73%) while other subjects remain significantly below, Glenoaks is at a critical point where strategic, data-driven changes are needed to improve outcomes for all students.

Open Quote We LOVE Glenoaks Elementary! They have an incredible staff that has the students' well being first on their list. We have a son who is academically ahead of his class, yet he is one of the youngest in his class. Academically, he could probably test to skip a grade, but socially he is better to stay with his class. The staff at Glenoaks looks at his situation just as they do with every child, and makes decisions with us to make sure he in in the best place for him to grow, both academically AND socially. Since the first grade he has attended GT classes and for math and reading he attends the next grade level up. This requires some juggling to make sure he can get to those classes because they may not be at the same time for 2 different grades. But the school does what they have to in his best interest. We have meetings twice a year, and not just with his teacher...the principal, counselors, his GT teacher, and his 2 classroom teachers for each grade will attend...to assess his progress. They do their best to make sure every child is given the surroundings and attention they need to be the best they can be. We really want to move, but will not even consider it before he reaches 5th grade because this school has been too valuable to us to give up. Kudos to Glenoaks Elementary!!! Close Quote
