Summary

Pirrung Elementary is a public elementary school located in Mesquite, Texas, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 439. Despite being part of the Mesquite Independent School District (ISD), which is ranked 622 out of 961 districts in Texas, Pirrung Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools over the past 10 years, maintaining a 1-star or 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Pirrung Elementary's academic performance lags significantly behind the district and state averages across multiple subject areas and grade levels. For example, in 2024-2025, only 24.59% of 3rd graders at Pirrung were proficient in STAAR Reading, compared to 41.47% for Mesquite ISD and 52.02% for Texas. The school's performance is particularly low in Mathematics, with only 16.67% of 4th graders and 33.82% of 5th graders reaching proficiency in 2024-2025. This persistent underperformance suggests a need for a comprehensive review of instructional practices and resource allocation at the school.

While Pirrung Elementary faces significant challenges, there may be opportunities to learn from the successes of nearby schools within the district. For instance, Rutherford Elementary, located just 1.39 miles away, consistently outperforms Pirrung in STAAR assessments and has a higher SchoolDigger rating. By addressing the unique needs of its student population, which includes a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, and exploring best practices from higher-performing schools, Pirrung Elementary may be able to make meaningful progress in closing the achievement gap and providing a high-quality education for all its students.

Open Quote The teachers are fine, The leadership meaning the principal and vice principal are more concerned about trying to control the parents then they are about the kids education they tell you how to fix their hair what to wear and who can and cannot come to the school and if you call to try to get any help from the district superintendent or anybody nobody will help you that's why they do what they want to do I think they are big bullies. And they have no compassion for the underdog. The vice principal is the worst. Close Quote
