Slaton Middle

Public, Magnet Grades 6-8
Summary

Slaton Middle is a public magnet middle school in the Lubbock Independent School District (ISD) in Lubbock, Texas, serving grades 6-8 with an enrollment of 321 students. Despite its magnet school status, Slaton Middle has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Texas middle schools over the past decade, with a 0-1 star rating from SchoolDigger.

Slaton Middle significantly underperforms compared to the Lubbock ISD and Texas state averages on STAAR standardized tests across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2024-2025, only 36.96% of 6th graders were proficient in reading, compared to 52.17% for Lubbock ISD and 54.21% for Texas. The math proficiency rates are even lower, with only 6.52% of 6th graders and 4.94% of 7th graders meeting standards. Additionally, Slaton Middle has consistently higher dropout rates than the district and state averages, ranging from 2.5% to 2.9% over the past few years.

Interestingly, Slaton Middle performs significantly worse than other middle schools in the Lubbock ISD, such as Irons Middle, Mackenzie Middle, and Cavazos Middle, which have higher academic proficiency rates, lower dropout rates, and serve a lower percentage of economically disadvantaged students. Despite spending more per student ($11,597 in 2020-2021) compared to the district average, Slaton Middle's academic outcomes are still among the lowest in the state, suggesting that factors beyond just funding may be contributing to the school's poor performance.
