Summary

Hassler Elementary is a high-performing PK-5 school in the Klein Independent School District (Isd) with 625 students, consistently ranking among the top 8% of all Texas elementary schools and earning a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger every year since 2015-2016.

Hassler stands out dramatically from its Klein ISD neighbors, with STAAR test scores that significantly exceed both district and state averages. In 5th-grade science, Hassler achieved a 63.5% proficiency rate—nearly double the district average and more than double the state average—far outpacing nearby schools like Brill Elementary (56.3%) and Frank Elementary (50.4%). Reading and math scores are equally impressive, with 5th-grade reading at 85.7% proficiency compared to the state average of 58.5%. The school also excels across all student subgroups, earning 4 or 5 stars for Special Education, African American, and Hispanic students. While Hassler is the clear leader among its Klein ISD peers, it faces strong competition from nearby Tomball ISD schools like Willow Creek Elementary, which ranks in the 95th percentile and posts comparable scores in some subjects.

Despite its elite status, Hassler has seen a slight downward trend in its overall state ranking, slipping from the 97th percentile to the 92nd percentile in recent years. A notable area of concern is the sharp decline in performance for English Language Learner students, which dropped from the 93rd percentile to the 64th percentile. Additionally, the Gifted and Talented subgroup has declined from the 92nd to the 76th percentile. These trends suggest that while Hassler remains a top-tier school, it faces new challenges in maintaining its exceptional performance for all students. The school's relatively low rate of economic disadvantage (25.8% qualifying for free/reduced lunch) is significantly lower than nearby Klein ISD schools like Ehrhardt Elementary (66.1%) and Mittelstadt Elementary (70.0%), which correlates with its strong academic outcomes.

Open Quote We, like many, moved to the neighborhood for Hassler. Our daughter started kindergarten there, and the experience was mixed. Her teacher was young and her approach to discipline was inconsistent and caused the children undue stress. She repeatedly told children that little things weren't her job, and her contract wasn't renewed. My wife and I are both former educators, so we don't feel that the mediocre beginnings impacted our daughter in an irreparable fashion, and we held out hope for first grade.
She started this year in a class with only one student from her kindergarten class, no big deal though all of her friends seemed to be in one class together. She was bummed out, but by the third week she was talking about her new friends and getting comfortable with the new homework regimen and her teacher. Then, yesterday (Thursday, 9/17/2015) she and a number of other children were called out of PE, and marched to a new classroom in the 2nd grade hall. This, they were told , is their new class, and new teacher. Their stuff was waiting for them and everything. I understand that enrollments may be higher than expected and movement may be necessary, but the school made no effort to communicate the change to parents or students in advance, though the teachers knew about it on Monday and were asked on Wednesday if any students on the list were absolutely incompatible with change. Then, on Thursday, 20 5- and 6-year-old children were ambushed and taken away to a strange new class with a new teacher without a chance to talk about the upcoming change with their teacher or parents. I had to wait, worried, for 10 minutes longer than usual after school wondering why my daughter hadn't come out yet, only to see her walking dejectedly down the hall to the back door, crying inconsolably. It's clear that whoever made this decision is either a fool or an incompetent, as anyone who works with children, has a child or has been around children would know that this is not an acceptable way of introducing them to a fundamental and potentially traumatic change. There is nothing that an administrator from Hassler or Klein ISD can say or do that will make me forgive them for the manner in which this change was forced--no notice, no chance to prepare our children for the change, no explanation of how the children were chosen, and no discussion. Second grade elsewhere. Close Quote
