Summary

Theiss Elementary is a PK-5 school in the Klein Independent School District (Isd) serving 637 students, and while it has a strong historical reputation, recent data shows a school in transition with clear strengths and emerging challenges. The school’s greatest asset is its early-grade Reading program, where 3rd graders significantly outperform both the district and state averages, and its Gifted and Talented program ranks in the 87th percentile. However, this success does not carry through to upper grades; by 5th grade, Math proficiency drops to 52.27%, well below the district average, and Science is a critical weakness, with only 27.05% of 5th graders proficient—far behind nearby Hassler Elementary’s 63.48%.

Compared to its neighbors, Theiss has followed a "peak and decline" trajectory, falling from the 96th percentile in 2015-2016 to the 77th percentile today. In contrast, Brill Elementary has jumped from the 75th to the 90th percentile in just two years, and Hassler Elementary now outperforms Theiss in every subject and grade level—for example, 5th-grade Reading at Hassler is 85.71% versus Theiss’s 64.12%. The most concerning trend is the dramatic decline in support for low socio-economic status students, whose ranking plummeted from the 80th percentile to the 48th percentile in a single year—a drop not seen at nearby schools like Blackshear Elementary.

Theiss also spends less per student ($8,447) than its Klein ISD peers and has a higher student-teacher ratio (15.6), which may contribute to its challenges. While the school excels in early-grade Reading and enrichment for high-achievers, parents should be aware that math and science instruction in upper grades, as well as support for all student groups, are areas needing attention. To reverse its downward trend, the school will need to focus on building on its early successes and replicating its GT program’s effectiveness for every learner.
