Summary

Friendship Elementary is a PK-4 school in Keller, TX, serving 464 students within the highly-rated Keller Independent School District (Isd), but it has experienced a significant decline in state rankings over the past decade, dropping from the 83rd percentile to the 24th percentile in recent data.

The most notable differentiator for Friendship Elementary is its high rate of economic disadvantage, with a Free/Reduced Lunch rate of 65.09%—more than double that of nearby high-performing schools like Willis Lane Elementary (15.69%) and Bette Perot Elementary (24.5%). While these peers consistently rank in the top 25% of Texas schools, Friendship has fallen to the bottom 25%, a trend that is school-specific rather than district-wide. The school's performance for its largest student group—those from low-income backgrounds—has been volatile, swinging from exceptional results (79th percentile) to very low scores (6th percentile) in just two years. This inconsistency is a red flag, especially when compared to Whitley Road Elementary, which has a similar poverty rate (58.82%) but ranks significantly higher (59th percentile).

Despite these challenges, Friendship Elementary has shown flashes of excellence, such as near-perfect 5th-grade math scores (though the school only goes up to 4th grade, this may reflect a small cohort). However, the school's overall trajectory is concerning, with performance for subgroups like African American students and English Language Learners also showing dramatic swings. Nearby Heritage Elementary, which has a similar poverty rate (53.31%) and low rank (27th percentile), has actually overtaken Friendship in recent years, suggesting that Friendship's challenges are accelerating. The school's central need is to stabilize its core instruction in reading and math for grades 3 and 4, and to develop a consistent strategy for supporting its economically disadvantaged students.

Open Quote Between our two children, we are entering into our sixth year with this wonderful school. We have found it to be an organized, caring and encouraging environment for our children. The teachers have all been attentive and open with both parents and students. They were able to recognize certain characteristics of my child's learning abilities and immediately sought intervention. This has not only had a profound impact on my child's all around education, but also on their confidence in their ability to learn the subjects that were once challenging. I attribute this to the professional and caring staff who clearly want all students succeed and enjoy learning. The Principal during the first five years, Mr. Rische, was such a great leader of this school. He was always a visible presence on campus and, from the staff interactions I saw, was well respected. 2016-2017 school year will begin with a new Principal and several new staff members (front desk, counselor) but I am positive this school will continue to thrive. Open Quote This school is the classic case of the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. Communication among teachers, administration and communication to the parents definitely needs to be improved. I have also seen a teacher yelling at her students and another teacher be condescending towards her students. If you are looking for a home in the friendship elementary zone I would definitely look elsewhere. If you want your child to receive a good education in a good environment then this is not the place for you. Close Quote
