Summary

Shadowbriar Elementary is a small, PK-5 public school in the Houston Independent School District (Isd) serving 334 students in a densely populated area of Houston, where over 86% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Shadowbriar has engineered a remarkable and sustained turnaround. After ranking in the bottom 20-30% of Texas elementary schools for years, it jumped to the 62nd percentile in the 2023-2024 school year and has maintained strong performance since. This makes it a standout among nearby Houston Independent School District (Isd) schools, outperforming neighbors like Askew Elementary (22nd percentile) and Walnut Bend Elementary (36th percentile) by a wide margin. A key driver of this success is an exceptionally low student-teacher ratio of 11.9:1, the smallest of any nearby school (compared to 14.9:1 at Ashford Elementary and 19.1:1 at Ray Daily Elementary). The school also invests heavily, spending $11,176 per student, significantly more than nearby HISD peers.

While the school excels in Reading and Math, 5th Grade Science remains a persistent challenge, with only 38.89% of students proficient. Additionally, performance for Hispanic students has been volatile, swinging from the 90th percentile in 2023-2024 to the 12th percentile in 2025-2026, a pattern not seen in other student groups. For families considering options, Shadowbriar now stands as a more competitive public school choice compared to higher-performing nearby alternatives like Sst Advancement and Alief Montessori Community School, which consistently rank in the 60th-80th percentiles but operate under different district structures and curricula.

Open Quote The hand full of teachers I’ve witnessed being aggressive with children is appalling! They have ZERO patience when it comes to children with needs. Teachers apparently reward some and not all AUTISTIC children with snacks/donuts and not the others who do understand WHY they are being treated differently! I’ve stated 5x in the first 2 weeks of school that my child ELOPES- yet my child was walking without a teacher and even coming out of the school at the end of the day WITHOUT a teacher holding his hand! I’ve stressed the URGENCY multiple times regarding the safety of my child and all children who elope. The teacher had not even opened my child’s folder to KNOW the child has that tendency. There is not compassion or empathy when it comes to your child with needs! Walk away and choose another school- because this one needs A LOT of WORK. They will send home ELEMENTARY reports at the end of the day with comments like - your child was whining , tantrums , screaming etc. I’m confused at the terminology being used considering these are children again, on the spectrum!!! School is an absolute mess. Close Quote

Open Quote If you expect to be treated with respect as a parent, don't count on it at Shadowbriar. Great scores in 2011, but don't expect the same after the new administrator (with a grand total of 3 months prior experience as an administrator and only one true year of teaching "experience") destroys the existing system in the name of "uniformity."
