Summary

Black Middle in Houston, TX, is a large public school serving 1,364 students in grades 6-8 within the Houston Independent School District (Isd), and it stands out as a solid, above-average performer in a diverse area where just over half of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

This school truly shines in advanced coursework, with proficiency rates in Algebra I (85%) and Biology (98%) that far exceed district and state averages. For example, while nearby Hogg Middle also excels in Algebra I, Black Middle’s Biology score is the highest among comparable schools. The school is particularly effective for students in advanced programs, ranking White students in the top 5% and Asian students in the top 2% statewide. However, there is a notable weakness: only 6.58% of 7th graders are proficient in math, a steep drop from 6th and 8th grade levels. This "7th grade math cliff" may be linked to many students taking Algebra I early, leaving a smaller group in standard math. On a positive note, Black Middle has shown rapid improvement for low-income and English Language Learner students, with their state rankings jumping from the bottom third to the top third over the last three years.

Compared to nearby schools like Clifton Middle and Williams Middle, which have higher poverty rates and lower rankings, Black Middle operates as a high-performing anchor with moderate economic disadvantage. It also achieves strong results with less funding—spending $8,483 per student versus over $12,000 at lower-performing neighbors. However, a rising dropout rate (7.1% in 2023-2024, compared to the district’s 3.8%) is a concern that families may want to explore further.

Open Quote There are great things happening at Frank Black Middle School. An exceptional faculty is in place and the principal is leading a remarkable turn-around. Bond money is being spent to upgrade the school. Student discipline is moving in the right direction and community members are taking an active interest in improving the school. It's a big school with lots of good features on the campus: a great track and athletic field, a dance studio, an indoor swimming pool and a wood shop to name a few. Things are definitely moving in the right direction and the future looks very bright. Close Quote
