Summary

Bright Academy is an elementary school in Frisco, TX, serving 485 students from Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the highly-rated Frisco Independent School District (Isd). The school stands out from its neighbors due to a significantly higher rate of economic disadvantage, with 50.1% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, compared to just 10-13% at top-performing nearby schools like Vaughn Elementary, Curtsinger Elementary, and Gunstream Elementary. While the school has a lower student-teacher ratio (11.6:1) than these peers, its overall academic performance on the STAAR exam is notably lower, with recent scores in 4th grade math (33.71%) and 5th grade science (21.67%) falling well below the district average.

Bright Academy has experienced a "J-curve" recovery over the past decade, climbing from a low point in 2018 to a peak in 2023, but has since declined. A key concern is a significant and growing achievement gap between genders, with female students consistently outperforming male students, who dropped to the 34th percentile in the most recent data. The school shows a clear strength in serving its Special Education students, who have improved to the 78th percentile, but faces critical challenges with its largest subgroups: Low Socio-Economic Status students have plummeted to the 10th percentile, and Hispanic and English Language Learner students have also seen sharp declines.

Interestingly, Bright Academy spends more per student ($10,429) than high-performing neighbors like Smith Elementary ($13.24% disadvantaged) and Allen Elementary (9.9% disadvantaged), yet achieves lower academic outcomes. This suggests that while resources are available, they may not be effectively targeted to address the needs of the school's most vulnerable students. For parents, this means Bright Academy offers smaller class sizes and strong support for special needs, but the overall academic results are mixed, and the school is actively working to overcome challenges tied to its unique student population.

Open Quote We moved our son to Bright Academy from another IB school when it converted in 2018-2019 school year. The education is individualized for the student. The teacher culture is positive, upbeat and compassionate. You can really tell the teachers are experts in education and IB, empathetic and really care about each child. My son's scores went up 10-15 points putting him in the top 90's to 100. I was also provided a lot of detail around his levels and how he was doing through the year. There are no surprises which I appreciate. The school is also quick to respond and address questions, concerns or to provide generally clarity on anything. I love Bright Academy and Mrs. Dodon's team. I am so sad that he will be moving to Middle School. The info here isn't totally accurate. I would recommend visiting the school and seeing for yourself.
