Summary

Morningside Elementary is a PK-5 public school in the Fort Worth Independent School District (Isd), serving 401 students in a high-poverty community where over 94% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Morningside has historically ranked in the bottom 15-20% of Texas elementary schools, but recent data shows a significant upward trend. In 2025-2026, the school climbed to the 23rd percentile statewide—its highest rank in years—outperforming nearby Edward Briscoe Elementary (3rd percentile) and Van Zandt-Guinn Elementary (15th percentile). The school is exceptionally effective with Special Education students, ranking in the 57th percentile statewide in 2025-2026 and the 74th percentile the year prior. Morningside also consistently excels in 4th Grade Mathematics, with 53.06% of students proficient in 2025-2026, outpacing both the district (43.6%) and the state (49.28%). Male students and African American students perform notably better here than the school’s overall rank suggests, ranking in the 31st and 30th percentiles respectively.

While Morningside shows clear strengths, challenges remain. Science scores are a critical weakness, with only 2.44% of 5th graders proficient in 2024-2025, compared to 38% at nearby George Clarke Elementary. However, the bilingual program appears to be a relative strength, with Spanish reading scores often exceeding district averages. Interestingly, De Zavala Elementary (1.41 miles away) ranks in the 85th percentile despite a similar poverty rate, showing that high poverty does not predetermine outcomes. Morningside’s per-student spending ($13,903) is higher than the state average but lower than Mitchell Boulevard Elementary ($17,794), which has a similar demographic profile but a slightly lower overall ranking (20th percentile). This suggests that how funding is used—particularly in special education and 4th-grade math—is driving Morningside’s recent improvement.

Open Quote This school has a problem. In the middle of the school year I was asked to attend a meeting at the school. When I arrived I was walked to a room with a few people sitting down, the principal, the counselor, the interventionist, my child's teachers and one other person. Basically, they called the meeting to pressure me to put my child in Special Education and to put him on ADHD medication. Since this was the first I had heard about the need to do such a thing, I refused. When The principal saw that I would not agree to her terms she told me to do something or she would take matters into her own hands. I not sure what that meant, but that's how things ended.
